Additional Questions Parents Often Ask

What ages do you see?

Our counselors see patients of all ages, from young children through teens and even young adults.

What happens at the first appointment?

Your child’s first visit is a great starting point to better understand their mental health needs. The appointment usually includes:

1. Questionnaires and assessments to learn about your child’s symptoms and concerns.
2. One-on-one meeting with a licensed Behavioral Health Counselor
3. Collaborative plan-making; by the end of the visit the counselor will work with you and your child to create a next-step plan. This may include: continuing counseling at our office, connecting with additional resources, referrals for longer-term counseling or specialty care if needed.

How long are appointments?

Most counseling sessions last 45-60 minutes.

How many visits will my child need?

This depends on your child’s unique needs. Some families benefit from a few short-term sessions, while others may need ongoing support.

Is counseling private?

Yes. We follow strict confidentiality guidelines. Counselors may share relevant information with your child’s medical provider only when it supports coordinated care.

Does insurance cover counseling?

Coverage varies by plan. Our staff can help you check your benefits and understand costs before your first visit.

Do you offer crisis services?

Our counselors provide scheduled outpatient care, not emergency services. If your child is in crisis, please call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department.

Emily Holden is a licensed professional counselor, a nationally board-certified counselor, and an ADHD certified clinical service provider. She has previous experience working as a school counselor, as a therapist for foster families and as a tele-medicine pediatric therapist. She enjoys working with patients of all ages. Her therapeutic approaches include cognitive behavioral therapy, solution focused brief therapy and she also incorporates elements of play therapy and bibliotherapy into her practice as well. She strives to use evidence-based therapy techniques to create positive change for individuals and families.

There are many practical things that she can help with which include, but are not limited to: understanding and navigating ADHD, emotional regulation, anger management, understanding the connection between thoughts feelings and emotions, coping skills, stress management, anxiety, depression, school and home behavioral concerns, developing a growth mindset, motivation, re-framing negative thinking and perfectionism.

When she is not helping kids, Emily enjoys spending time outside with her husband David and her two children Anelise (age 10) and Liam (age 12) in beautiful western Colorado! She recently moved back to the area and is a Montrose native. She is excited to be helping students and families in her hometown.

Hannah McHargue is a southern native who moved to Colorado in 2018. She earned her Bachelor of Social Work degree from the University of Alabama and Master of Social Work degree from the University of Southern California.

Hannah enjoys focusing her counseling services on children and families, and believes wellness thrives when children and parents can come together in understanding.  Hannah specializes in treating children who have experienced trauma and LGBTQ+ populations.  She utilizes a variety of evidenced-based therapeutic techniques including play therapy, sand tray therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy and more.  She is a certified practitioner of TFCBT, DBT, PCIT, PTR, & CAMS.

When Hannah is not helping families meet their goals, you can find her spending time with her husband, children, and dogs, enjoying a local festival or live music.

Ashley is a graduate of Truman State University (BA – psychology & art) and Lindenwood University (MA – professional & school counseling) both in Missouri where she grew-up. She has spent the first seven years of her career as a school counselor, five of them in Montrose County Schools. She has enjoyed getting to work with elementary through high school students and helping to meet the unique challenges that come with each grade level. She looks forward to not only continuing to help youth do better in school by improving mental health, but also to work as part of their care team to help them and their families learn skills to make healthy, life-long habits.

When she’s not working with kids and learning about the brain, she can be found outside- hiking & biking in the mountains, working in her garden, being humbled by CrossFit, reading, and occasionally painting.
